Hideo Kojima, the king of online movie reviews, is back with his viewing recommendations on social media, and this time the video game developer has expressed his admiration for the surprising new hit on Apple TV, the horror series Widow’s Bay.
Hideo Kojima’s post
Kojima shared his thoughts on X: “It’s so incredibly good that I couldn’t stop watching it, so I devoured 9 episodes in one sitting. It’s packed with horror elements, one after another. Fans of Stephen King and horror in general will love it. The pacing is excellent, and the balance between horror and humor is perfect,“ Kojima said. ”It’s been a long time since a series has drawn me in this much.” In addition to recommending the series to Stephen King fans, Kojima compared the new horror series to masterpieces like Steven Spielberg’s Jaws and David Lynch’s Twin Peaks saga. “On Guillermo del Toro’s recommendation, I started watching ‘Widow’s Bay’ on Apple TV+. It’s so good that I couldn’t stop, so I binge-watched all 9 episodes in one sitting. This horror comedy, produced by Hiro Murai, is set in a cursed small town 60 kilometers off the coast of New England. Thick fog, violent storms, and all sorts of supernatural phenomena descend upon the town. It’s packed with horror elements, one after another. Fans of Stephen King and horror in general will love it. The pacing is excellent, and the balance between horror and humor is perfect. Ironically, the mayor’s tireless efforts to attract tourists reminded me of Mayor Vaughn from Jaws. The townspeople are also wonderfully eccentric, with personalities that seem to have come straight out of Twin Peaks. It’s been a long time since a series has engaged me this much. I can’t wait for the final episode next Wednesday.”
What to Know About Widow’s Bay
Kojima said he watched the series on the recommendation of “Frankenstein” director Guillermo del Toro, who posted his review on X on June 1: “Widow’s Bay might be the best streaming series in recent memory… and undoubtedly one of the most fascinating examples of narrative sleight of hand in the horror genre,” Del Toro said… high praise indeed from the director of Pan’s Labyrinth!
Set on a fictional New England island called Widow’s Bay, the series follows the story of a new mayor who is trying to attract tourists and breathe new life into the now-backward town. However, the locals claim that the island is cursed, a fact that soon becomes evident when a series of unexplained paranormal events begin to occur. The series stars Matthew Rhys, Kate O’Flynn, Kevin Carroll, Dale Dickey, Kingston Rumi Southwick, and Stephen Root. The show debuted on Apple TV on April 29, but its popularity has grown steadily, and Widow’s Bay now boasts an impressive 97% on Rotten Tomatoes and has already been renewed for a second season by Apple.
The season 1 finale of Widow’s Bay will be available on Apple TV on June 17.
