Obsession beats even Bruce Lee! The 2026 horror phenomenon sets a historic record at the box office.

Two months after its debut in theaters, Obsession continues to break record after record. The breakout horror film directed by Curry Barker has officially surpassed the $400 million mark at the global box office, establishing itself as one of the most astonishing cinematic surprises in recent years.

The real news lies in the production costs: made with an estimated budget of just $750,000, the film has become the most profitable feature film in the history of cinema among those produced with a budget of less than a million (data adjusted for inflation). An incredible achievement that propels the film into the pantheon of independent cinema.

    The historical precedents among “low-budget”

Before the Obsession cyclone, only one immortal cult had managed to surpass $400 million starting from a budget of less than a million: we are talking about Enter the Dragon (1973), the masterpiece starring Bruce Lee. Of course, the history of cinema is full of low-cost miracles that have revolutionized the industry – just think of pillars like Rocky, The Blair Witch Project, or Paranormal Activity – but, with the data in hand, their production budgets had still exceeded, albeit slightly, the fateful threshold of one million dollars.

    The power of word-of-mouth

Initially promoted as a supernatural thriller centered on a desire that ended quite badly, Obsession quickly climbed the charts thanks to reviews that were nothing short of enthusiastic and the extraordinary and intense performance of the lead actress, Inde Navarrette.

After a modest yet solid opening weekend of $7 million, the film maintained an impressive weekly hold, driven by relentless word-of-mouth among enthusiasts. Thanks to this incredible run, the film has become the second original title not tied to any franchise to surpass $200 million in the American domestic market since 2018, right after Ryan Coogler’s Sinners.

The new wave of directors born on the web

Hollywood insiders are already comparing the trajectory of Obsession to that of Kane Parsons’ The Backrooms, another horror hit of 2026 that was born and grew within the folds of the internet. Both successes highlight an undeniable trend: a new generation of directors is successfully making the big leap from YouTube channels to Hollywood productions. The majors, of course, didn’t just sit back and have already given the green light to several horror projects based on viral creepypasta and urban legends born on the web.

At the moment, Obsession ranks seventh in the list of the most profitable films of the year globally, surpassing blockbusters like Scream 7, Jumpers, The Mandalorian & Grogu, and Disclosure Day. The phenomenon has become so viral that it even caught the attention of the King of Horror, Stephen King, who recently gave the film a full endorsement on his social media profiles.
