What can we expect from The Social Reckoning, the highly anticipated sequel to The Social Network, now that the first teaser trailer has been released?

Mark Zuckerberg has grown up, and so has the (negative?) influence of his Facebook

The Social Reckoning arrives sixteen years after its predecessor, the acclaimed The Social Network, winner of three Oscars (including Best Adapted Screenplay). Sixteen years in which the film’s subject—Facebook—has indelibly changed lives—and often politics—around the world. This is precisely what the sequel—written once again and this time also directed by Aaron Sorkin—focuses on: after chronicling in the first installment the rise of “The Facebook,” the social experiment of a very young Mark Zuckerberg that transformed into one of the most promising startups (despite controversies and lawsuits), the focus now shifts to a much more mature and problematic phase of social media, when, around 2021, troubling revelations emerged about the influence of the digital giant (which had since become Meta) not only on geopolitical factors such as elections but also on the very mental and physical well-being of its users.

Now, the first teaser trailer, released in the past few hours, confirms the approach the film will take in retelling this story. The film will recount how a former Facebook engineer, Frances Haugen (played by Mikey Madison), passed on confidential information and documents to Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz (Jeremy Scott White), the author of an investigative piece that would later become The Facebook Files. This series of reports revealed the negative consequences of the social network on teenage behavior, as well as its role in spreading misinformation and fake news, effectively manipulating certain election campaigns. Meanwhile, we also see Zuckerberg himself (played this time by Jeremy Strong of Succession, after being portrayed by Jesse Eisenberg in the first film), preparing for a congressional hearing to address these very allegations.

As this teaser clip suggests, the tone of this sequel is quite different from that of the previous film, The Social Network, which essentially took the form of a biographical film centered on the charismatic yet enigmatic figure of Zuckerberg, revealing his ruthlessness while still staying within the framework of a classic American Dream narrative. This new film, on the other hand, is more of a political thriller, featuring journalistic investigations, interrogations, informants, and unspeakable secrets. Sorkin himself aims to reflect here on the political and cultural consequences of a phenomenon like social media, in which—it seems—there are specific human responsibilities: “There is no life that hasn’t been touched by Facebook’s algorithm, and that influence has shaped everything. So it’s time to say more,” he stated at the recent CinemaCon in Las Vegas. An urgent need for awareness, then, that will likely strike us with force upon its release in theaters, scheduled for October 2026.
