Being sad and hating all that mushy stuff is exhausting work: take it from Jenna Ortega, who, in the midst of filming the new season of Wednesday, talks about how demanding it is to play the eldest daughter of the Addams family in the Netflix series.
Ortega took her first steps into the entertainment world at just ten years old: the actress had worked as an extra as a child, but her first television role came later with the sixth episode of the first season of the TV series Rob, titled “The Baby Bug.” Then came her big break with a small role in the MCU as the daughter of U.S. Vice President Rodriguez in Iron Man 3 and another in Insidious. She played the young version of Jane in the series Jane the Virgin before landing the lead role in Harley in the Middle. Jenna Ortega spent much of her youth on set, yet a production like that of Wednesday has managed to wear the actress out quite a bit.
On the Big Bro podcast with Kid Cudi, the star of Hurry Up Tomorrow talked about the less glamorous side of acting: “[…] You wake up, go to work, shoot, come home, watch the footage, and start all over again. You do that five or six days a week. There’s really no room for a private life. Which, I repeat, is a blessing, but it’s a very intense job,” said Jenna Ortega, emphasizing that her feelings aren’t always so positive: “I feel like I’m sleepwalking. You’re so exhausted and so used to doing the same thing every day that you stop challenging yourself. Luckily, it’s a creative job, so you always find inspiration in a scene, a new character, or a new premise.”
In short, Hollywood isn’t always all roses and sunshine. Filming often takes place on locations overseas, a production decision that brings with it an added burden of stress. Jenna Ortega’s words give us a more human behind-the-scenes look that we certainly won’t overlook as we look forward to the upcoming debut of the third season of Wednesday on Netflix! While the first two seasons of Wednesday were filmed in Romania, the first official photo from Wednesday 3 shows us a Parisian location for the hunt for Enid!
